Braids by Marilyn was established in 2019 by Marilyn, a self-taught hair braider, health professional, and aspiring hair artist! Growing up, Marilyn had a complicated relationship with her hair due to traditional beauty standards and the stigma surrounding curly hair, often labeled as "pelo malo" or "bad hair." She found comfort in protective styles and began her natural hair journey by braiding her own hair beginning in her college dorms. This journey led her to self-discovery and embrace her Afro-Latina roots.

In 2020, Marilyn started gaining recognition for her "natural light weight protective styles," particularly through knotless braids. These styles not only provide a protective measure for natural hair but also serve as a medium for self-expression and art.

"Braiding my own hair was a form of self-care and self-identity. I found new love and passion, and now I get to share my passion with other women who, like me, use protective styles as a form of self-expression and art," says Marilyn.
